Basic Marinara Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 (28-ounce) can of whole tomatoes (or crushed tomatoes)
- 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
- Salt to taste
- 1-2 teaspoons sugar (optional, to taste)
- 1-2 bay leaves
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. If using onions, add them now and sauté until translucent.
- Add the minced garlic and sauté for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant but not browned.
- Add the whole tomatoes to the pan. If using whole tomatoes, break them up a bit with your spoon or hand. Add the juices as well.
- Add bay leaves, salt, and sugar.
- Simmer the sauce for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the more the flavors will meld together.
- Adjust the seasoning with more salt or sugar if needed.
- Remove the bay leaves before using or storing.

- Vegetable-Loaded: Sauté bell peppers, zucchini, and eggplant before adding the tomatoes for a chunky, veggie-packed sauce.
