Shadow Self

The Shadow Self is comprised of our repressed or hidden motives and desires. This is in contrast to The Persona, which is the public expression of our selves that we show the world. Too much focus on The Persona - our public face - leads to disconnection from our true selves and to lack of authenticity.

As a model, consider the example archetypes and shadow counterparts in the #Archetypes section below.

The shadow self includes negative impulses. Cultural repression of these dark desires, however, may be excessive; limiting the healthy expressions of these motives inhibits authenticity and diversity.

While uncontrolled expression of one's shadow self can be destructive, consider how shadow archetypes such as The Bully or The Tyrant can be channeled into athletic performance. Emotions available to The Perfectionist and The Addict can be leveraged by artists to create their greatest works.

The key to integrating the shadow self in a healthy way lies in balance. The persona enables us to work with our community by conforming to conventional behavior, and finding healthy expressions of our shadow self enables us to be more authentic and adds flavor and diversity to the community.

Archetypes

The diagram at right has one example of stock archetypes, the list below has another set. I feel like there is room to abstract the concept and explore additional traits, motives, or emotions to develop more persona/shadow pairs. As an example, the trait "sensitive" with archetype "empathic" and shadow "fragile" does not seem to be properly covered by "Caregiver / Martyr" (nor any other available option).

Alternate Set of Archetypes
  1. The Hero / The Bully (strength)
    • Good: The Hero is courageous, strong, and self-sacrificing. They strive to overcome obstacles and protect others.
    • Shadow: The Bully uses their strength to dominate and intimidate others, acting out of arrogance or a need to prove themselves.
  2. The Caregiver / The Martyr (service)
    • Good: The Caregiver is compassionate, nurturing, and selfless, providing support and care for others.
    • Shadow: The Martyr sacrifices themselves unnecessarily, often to the detriment of their own well-being and sometimes with a sense of victimhood or resentment.
  3. The Sage / The Know-It-All (knowledge)
    • Good: The Sage is wise, knowledgeable, and seeks truth. They offer guidance and insight.
    • Shadow: The Know-It-All is arrogant, dismissive of others' opinions, and may use their knowledge to belittle or manipulate.
  4. The Explorer / The Wanderer (curiosity)
    • Good: The Explorer is adventurous, curious, and seeks new experiences and knowledge.
    • Shadow: The Wanderer is aimless, restless, and avoids commitment or responsibility, often feeling lost or unfulfilled.
  5. The Lover / The Addict (passion)
    • Good: The Lover is passionate, empathetic, and values relationships and connection.
    • Shadow: The Addict seeks pleasure or emotional highs at the expense of stability and self-control, often leading to destructive behavior.
  6. The Creator / The Perfectionist (innovation)
    • Good: The Creator is imaginative, innovative, and seeks to bring new ideas and expressions into the world.
    • Shadow: The Perfectionist is overly critical, never satisfied with their work, and may become paralyzed by the fear of imperfection.
  7. The Ruler / The Tyrant (leadership)
    • Good: The Ruler is responsible, organized, and strives to create order and stability.
    • Shadow: The Tyrant is controlling, oppressive, and abuses power to dominate others.
  8. The Magician / The Manipulator (influence)
    • Good: The Magician is transformative, visionary, and seeks to create change and growth.
    • Shadow: The Manipulator uses their insight and influence for selfish or deceptive purposes, often exploiting others.
  9. The Innocent / The Naïve (optimism)
    • Good: The Innocent is optimistic, pure-hearted, and seeks happiness and simplicity.
    • Shadow: The Naïve is overly trusting, gullible, and may avoid reality or deny unpleasant truths.
  10. The Rebel / The Outlaw (independence)
    • Good: The Rebel is courageous, challenges the status quo, and seeks to bring about change and innovation.
    • Shadow: The Outlaw is destructive, irresponsible, and may reject authority or norms in a way that harms themselves or others.
  11. The Everyman / The Conformist (community)
    • Good: The Everyman is relatable, grounded, and seeks to belong and connect with others.
    • Shadow: The Conformist sacrifices individuality to fit in, often losing their sense of self and becoming passive or complacent.
  12. The Jester / The Fool (irreverence)
    • Good: The Jester is playful, humorous, and brings joy and perspective through levity.
    • Shadow: The Fool is irresponsible, frivolous, and uses humor to deflect from serious issues or avoid accountability.

  6. Passion: Intense enthusiasm and dedication towards a particular cause or activity.
  7. Innovation: Creativity and the drive to develop new ideas, solutions, and approaches.
  8. Integrity: Adherence to moral and ethical principles; honesty and transparency.
  9. Courage: The ability to confront fear, uncertainty, and adversity with bravery.
  10. Humility: Recognizing one’s limitations and valuing the contributions of others.
  11. Gratitude: Appreciation and thankfulness for the positive aspects of life.
  12. Perseverance: Steadfastness and persistence in pursuing goals despite difficulties.
  13. Respect: Valuing and honoring the dignity and worth of all individuals.
  14. Creativity: The ability to think outside the box and generate original ideas.
  15. Accountability: Taking responsibility for one's actions and decisions.
  16. Optimism: Maintaining a positive outlook and expecting favorable outcomes.
  17. Discipline: The ability to stay focused, self-controlled, and committed to goals.
  18. Empathy: Understanding and sharing the feelings and perspectives of others.
  19. Adaptability: Flexibility and the ability to adjust to new circumstances and environments.
  20. Wisdom: The application of knowledge, experience, and judgment in making sound decisions.

Emotions

  1. Happiness: A state of joy, contentment, and well-being.
  2. Sadness: A feeling of sorrow, grief, or unhappiness.
  3. Anger: A strong feeling of displeasure, hostility, or irritation.
  4. Fear: An emotion caused by the perception of danger or threat, leading to a feeling of anxiety or apprehension.
  5. Surprise: A reaction to something unexpected, which can be either positive or negative.
  6. Disgust: A feeling of revulsion or profound disapproval aroused by something unpleasant or offensive.
  7. Love: A deep affection, attachment, or care for someone or something.
  8. Hate: Intense dislike or hostility towards someone or something.
  9. Jealousy: A feeling of envy or resentment towards someone else's success, possessions, or relationships.
  10. Trust: A feeling of confidence and reliance on someone or something.
  11. Anticipation: A feeling of excitement or anxiety about a future event.
  12. Embarrassment: A feeling of self-consciousness, shame, or awkwardness.
  13. Guilt: A feeling of responsibility or remorse for a perceived wrongdoing.
  14. Shame: A painful emotion caused by a sense of having done something wrong or disgraceful.
  15. Pride: A feeling of satisfaction and self-respect derived from one's own achievements or qualities.
  16. Relief: A feeling of reassurance and relaxation following the removal of stress or anxiety.

  18. Gratitude: A feeling of thankfulness and appreciation.
  19. Frustration: A feeling of annoyance and impatience caused by obstacles or unmet expectations.
  20. Compassion: A deep awareness of and sympathy for the suffering of others, coupled with a desire to help.
