Recreating MediaWiki Install, but running on a Namecheap virtual machine.
Get a Machine
- Go to Namecheap VPS Hosting.
- Pick periodicity - I'm using Monthly for my first pass. If I like it, I'll up it to yearly to get the discount.
- Click on "Get Started" under the "Pulsar" class (or whatever you want - in my experience, Pulsar is enough for modest loads).
- 1) Hosting Customization: Set your settings, here is what I'm using:
- Hosting Plan: Pulsar
- Billing Cycle: Monthly
- RAM: 2 GB
- Disk Space: 40 GB
- Server Management Plan: User Responsible
- Web Panel: None
- Operating System: Debian
- Click "Next Step"
- 2) Domain Name Connection
- Connect to: Existing Domain Name
- It will make it seem like you have to use a Namecheap domain and ask you to log in. Once you log in, it will show the option to use a third party domain.
- Existing Domain Name: Your Third-Party Domain Name
- Find a Domain Name: yourdomain.org
- Click "Add to Cart"
- Connect to: Existing Domain Name
- Click "Confirm Your Order"
- Click "Pay Now"
- My account already had payment details, so it just happened. It's a payment form, hopefully it's not too hard.
- Click "Manage"
- Click on "Hosting List" in the left column of buttons.
- Now is the part that I don't like. Waiting for the machine to be available. There are other hosts that are very fast to nearly instant.

- Mine currently has a yellow "Alert" flag at 13:02.
- Active at 14:37, but that doesn't say much because I've been visiting with my Mom and making hummus for the past hour and a half - I don't know when it went active.
