Recreating MediaWiki Install, but running on a Namecheap virtual machine.

Get a Machine

  1. Go to Namecheap VPS Hosting.
  2. Pick periodicity - I'm using Monthly for my first pass. If I like it, I'll up it to yearly to get the discount.
  3. Click on "Get Started" under the "Pulsar" class (or whatever you want - in my experience, Pulsar is enough for modest loads).
  4. 1) Hosting Customization: Set your settings, here is what I'm using:
    1. Hosting Plan: Pulsar
    2. Billing Cycle: Monthly
    3. RAM: 2 GB
    4. Disk Space: 40 GB
    5. Server Management Plan: User Responsible
    6. Web Panel: None
    7. Operating System: Debian
    8. Click "Next Step"
  5. 2) Domain Name Connection
    1. Connect to: Existing Domain Name
      • It will make it seem like you have to use a Namecheap domain and ask you to log in. Once you log in, it will show the option to use a third party domain.
    2. Existing Domain Name: Your Third-Party Domain Name
    3. Find a Domain Name: yourdomain.org
    4. Click "Add to Cart"
  6. Click "Confirm Your Order"
  7. Click "Pay Now"
    1. My account already had payment details, so it just happened. It's a payment form, hopefully it's not too hard.
  8. Click "Manage"
  9. Click on "Hosting List" in the left column of buttons.
  10. Now is the part that I don't like. Waiting for the machine to be available. There are other hosts that are very fast to nearly instant.

    2. Mine currently has a yellow "Alert" flag at 13:02.
    3. Active at 14:37, but that doesn't say much because I've been visiting with my Mom and making hummus for the past hour and a half - I don't know when it went active.
